Short Bio
Dr. Edie Cassell received her PhD in English Language and Linguistics from Purdue University and her MEd in English as a Second Language (ESL) from the University of San Francisco. She joined the Texas A&M faculty in 2007 and teaches ESL methods courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Cassell has facilitated study abroad programs to Italy, Switzerland, Costa Rica, and Mexico. She has worked with colleagues to develop an ongoing partnership with an elementary school in Guanajuato, Mexico (started in 2011) in order to provide pre-service teachers opportunities to work collaboratively, teaching English language learners overseas. Prior to joining the faculty at Texas A&M, Dr. Cassell trained International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) in the Oral English Proficiency Program at Purdue University for six years and has also taught ESL to secondary school students and adults in Indiana, California, and The Netherlands. Her research interests include collaborative teaching, cooperative learning, experiential learning, and developing best practices for teachers to support second language learning. Dr. Cassell is also very active in community outreach, currently serving on the East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Plan Contact Team and the Farmshare Austin Board of Directors.
