Short Bio

B. Stephen Carpenter II, is co-associate editor and co-editor elect for The Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy, a contributing and advisory editor for Callaloo, and a member of the Studies in Art Education editorial board. An active member of the National Art Education Association (NAEA), Carpenter is president of Seminar for Research in Art Education (NAEA) and a member of the NAEA Professional Materials Committee. He is past editor of Art Education (2003-2006) the journal of the National Art Education Association. Carpenter was named Southeast Region Higher Education Art Educator of the Year by NAEA in 2000. He received the Dorothy Liskey Wampler Distinguished Professorship from the Department of Art and Art History, James Madison University in 2004 and the NAEA J. Eugene Grigsby, Jr. award from the Committee on Multiethnic Concerns (COMC) in 2008. Carpenter is the author or co-author of several books, book chapters, journal articles, and essays on art education, cultural studies through visual inquiry, hypertext curriculum theory and design, visual culture, and ceramics criticism. He is the co-author of Interdisciplinary Approaches to Teaching Art in High School, with Pamela G. Taylor, Christine Ballengee-Morris and Billie Sessions, and co-editor of Curriculum for a Progressive, Provocative, Poetic and Public Pedagogy, with Jennifer Milam, Stephanie Springgay, and Kris Sloan. His writing appears in journals such as Art & Antiques, Art Education, Ceramics: Art and Perception, Educational Leadership, The Journal of Aesthetic Education, The Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education, The Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy, The Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, Terracotta, Studies in Art Education and Studio Potter. Carpenter exhibits his ceramics, mixed media, installations, and performance artworks and in 2001 and 2003 exhibited work in the 3rd and 4th Biennale Internazionale dell'arte contemporanea (Florence Biennale) in Florence, Italy.
