Kirsten W. Newell has been a school psychologist for over a decade; she practiced at the specialist level in New Jersey, New York, Washington, and Minnesota. Her work in practice piqued her interest in the research-to-practice or training-to-practice gap. She returned to graduate school and completed her doctorate at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Newell's research seeks to improve the use of academic assessment tools as part of systematic prevention and intervention systems in schools. Specifically, she is interested in validating assessment tools for use with students learning in more than one language.
